Marvelous Multiples: Learn the Art of Linocut Printmaking with Jo Shepherd

  • Moosomin Visual Arts Centre 701 Ellice Street Moosomin, Saskatchewan, S0G 3N0 Canada (map)

Participants should see the two days as an opportunity to get introduced to linocut, and go deeper. On day 1 we will get comfortable with the tools, complete at least one original piece, and get a sense of the possibilities. With that foundation, we can print multiple copies of original piece/s and make more. On day 2, there will be less group instruction and more time for focusing on individual projects. We can try more complex techniques such as printing with multiple colours and layers, or printing on fabric. Coming and going is fine on day 2, as per each person's artistic goals.

Also, participants may bring any fabric items if they wish to try putting their image/s on clothing. Soft t-shirt fabric, or any smooth cotton-type fabric can be tried. A jean jacket or tote bag could also work. I like printing on t-shirts I find at thrift stores.

FYI we'll be using sharp tools; you may want to wear old clothes in case of ink stains.

Minimum 5 participants.

Maximum 10 participants.

Bring your own lunch or break for lunch.

Registration closes midnight, November 6th, 2026.

ABOUT OUR ARTIST

Jo Shepherd grew up on a family farm near Moosomin, Saskatchewan with her parents Guy and Lori, and siblings Justin and Gena. Jo moved to Winnipeg after high school and in 2010, she participated in a Youth Outreach printmaking program run by Martha St. Studio. The class learned basic techniques in linocut, copper etching, monoprinting, and screen printing. Jo was most drawn to linocut, which involves carving images on smooth linoleum, rolling them with ink and impressing the image on paper or fabric. Since then, while obtaining a Library and Information Technology diploma and raising her son Milo, Jo has continued to make hand-printed linocut artwork on paper and cardstock for sale and gifts. She feels fortunate to have her own printing press and art room in the Regina home she shares with Milo! She loves sharing the joy of linocut with others through classes and workshops.
